"Let Me Entertain You"
Let Me Entertain You
By Stephen Sondheim and Jule Styne
Let me entertain you
Let me make you smile
Let me do a few tricks
Some old and some new tricks
I'm very versatile
And if you're real good
I'll make you feel good
I want your spirits to climb
So let me entertain you
And we'll have a real good time, yes sir
We'll have a real good time
Remember that old song from the Broadway Show "Gypsy"? It came to mind when I was thinking how so many of us, turn to food as our major form of entertainment? The trouble is that when we are "real good" it doesn't, in the long run, make us "feel good"? Do our spirits climb? Maybe from the initial sugar or carb rush but as we huff and puff our way to the scale, our spirits aren't soaring too high.
One of the things that has been monumental, in this FINAL weight loss stage of my life, is that I have made a conscious effort to diminish the importance of food in my life. If I make a tasty turkey goulash, instead of reaching for the second or third bowl, I tell myself, "There will be other goulashes", and you know what, there are!
I gave up snacking all together, these past two years, and only eat breakfast, lunch and dinner. If you are tryng to lose weight and give yourself permission to snack, you can end up grazing all day and never allow yourself to get hungry or to appreciate your three main meals.
Mealtime is now sacred to me; no phone calls, no TV. I appreciate the taste, the texture and the variety of the healthy foods I am making. I tell myself the food is sustaining me to do my work and live my life. I am no longer eating for entertainment.
My old Weight Watcher leader used to end each meeting by saying, "Nothing tastes as good as being thin feels." Now, I'm not trying to be thin, I'm a 55 year old, soon to be grandmother. I'm trying to be healthy and do what God wants me to do with my life. At my highest weight, He still loved me but now, I'm in such better shape to do His work. And you know what? I find His work more entertaining than food ever was.
