"Suck it Up"

My son was in the Saturday morning basketball league until he got old enough for the CYO team. I remember when he was in third grade and one of the kids got elbowed and fell to the court writhing in pain. I stood up in the bleachers, as the coach ran to the kid. He knelt by the poor boy's prone body, did a 10 second assessment and said, quite loudly, "suck it up." My first reaction was disbelief, then the kid bounced up and hurried back into the game.

It's winter in Syracuse NY, school is closed, for the second day in a row, my driveway is plowed in, no newspaper has made it to my mailbox, and the comfort food is calling my name from the kitchen.

Since that infamous Saturday, the coaches profound words have stayed with me. I have my MP3 player (I don't need a cooler IPod) with Beyonce and Lady Gaga on it. I am strapping on my honker headphones and am going to march in place for 10,000 steps. Then, I am going to have a 100 calorie pita pocket for lunch with dijon mustard, hummus and fat free swiss cheese. THEN I am going to do some money making work on my computer before I make scallops for my hardworking hubby.

In other words, I am going to SUCK IT UP. Thanks Coach.

  1. Suck it up - is what I did this morning. 8:45 am I was out digging out my car to move it out front of my building. Took a while, as I was plowed in pretty good. Having a great deal of chest pain, and shortness of breath I persevered and sucked it up and accomplished my goal. Then, I head over to help out my friend Carm; after much more work there, succeeded again. Came in put pj bottoms on, as pants were completely soaked, as snow was above my knees. Racked in pain, I got some cold gator ade and put the O2 on and rested. After 2 hrs, had a bowl of healthy cereal & skim milk and ready to face my next challenge. Need to go to the Sr. Ctr this afternoon to prepare for tomorrow Feb Fest for the Village of Camillus. I will be sucking it up all week-end until Sat. night and watching what I eat, but continuously moving.
Keep warm and enjoy the beautiful sunshine that is out there now. Thanks to my great Leader - Ellen for the continuous engouragement, especially todays. Charmaine

  2. Char, Char - I love you pal - I don't want you to overdo it though!!!!!!!!!! You have to watch yourself - some of us can suck it up and push ourselves - some of us need to. You can - to a certain extent but I don't want to hear about chest pains or shortness of breath!!! God loves you and so do I!!
